The Unit Converter brings the most common measurement conversions into one tool: length, weight, speed, temperature, area, volume and digital storage. Pick a category, enter a value, choose the “from” and “to” units, and you get the converted value plus the one-unit conversion factor. It is handy for homework, recipes, buying property (square feet, acres, hectares), online shopping from overseas sites, travel and engineering work.
How to use the unit converter
- Choose a category: Length, Weight, Speed, Temperature, Area, Volume or Digital storage.
- Enter the value and select the From and To units.
- Press Convert. Use Swap units to reverse the direction.
How conversion works
Every unit in a category is stored relative to one base unit (metre, kilogram, metre/second, square metre, litre or byte). Your value is converted to the base unit, then to the target:
Temperature is the exception, because its scales have different zero points. It uses formulas instead of a single factor. See the Temperature Converter.

Indian land and area units
Property listings in India mix square feet, square metres, acres, hectares and traditional local units. Traditional units vary from state to state, so confirm with your local land records office before any transaction.
| Unit | Equivalent | Where used |
|---|---|---|
| 1 square metre | 10.764 sq ft | Registration documents, RERA carpet area |
| 1 square yard (gaj) | 9 sq ft = 0.836 m² | Plots in Delhi NCR, Punjab, UP |
| 1 guntha | 1,089 sq ft = 101.17 m² (1/40 acre) | Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat |
| 1 cent | 435.6 sq ft (1/100 acre) | Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh |
| 1 ground | 2,400 sq ft | Chennai / Tamil Nadu |
| 1 acre | 43,560 sq ft = 40 guntha = 100 cents | Nationwide |
| 1 hectare | 2.471 acres = 10,000 m² | Government and agricultural records |
| 1 bigha | Varies widely (about 14,400 sq ft in Assam to about 27,000 sq ft in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan) | North and east India |
Digital storage: why your 1 TB drive shows 931 GB
Drive makers use decimal units (1 TB = 1012 bytes). Windows reports sizes in binary units (1 “GB” = 230 bytes). 1012 ÷ 230 ≈ 931, so nothing is missing. The international standard names for binary units are KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB. This converter uses binary (1,024) factors, which match what operating systems show.
Kitchen conversions
- 1 US cup = 240 ml (the converter uses this). A metric cup is 250 ml. An Indian katori is roughly 150–200 ml.
- 1 tablespoon = 15 ml · 1 teaspoon = 5 ml.
- Weight depends on the ingredient: 1 cup of atta weighs about 120–130 g, but 1 cup of sugar weighs about 200 g.
Metric vs imperial
India officially adopted the metric system in 1956–62, and legal trade uses SI units under the Legal Metrology Act. In daily life, heights are still given in feet and inches, screen sizes in inches, and property in square feet. The US mostly uses US customary units, and the UK mixes both, with miles on road signs and stones for body weight.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 4,046.86 square metres. One hectare is 2.471 acres, or 107,639 square feet.
How many square feet are in 1 guntha?
1 guntha = 1,089 square feet, or about 101.17 m². Forty gunthas make one acre.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply by 10.764. A 60 m² flat is about 646 sq ft. To go from sq ft to m², divide by 10.764.
Why does my 1 TB hard drive show 931 GB?
Manufacturers count 1 TB as 10^12 bytes, while Windows counts in binary units of 2^30 bytes. The result is about 931 “GB”, and no space is missing.
How big is a bigha?
It varies by state, from roughly 14,400 sq ft in Assam to around 27,000 sq ft in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Check your local land records.
